1st September – 4th October 2025
Christ, the Ruler of All, is still in the boat with us. He calls us not to fear, but to trust, to pray, and to care - for creation and for one another.
The tenth World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, celebrated on 1st September 2025, is the official start of the Season of Creation, a time of sustained prayer and action which lasts a month and four days. During this season we are encouraged to pray and engage in community events in order to deepen our relationship with God, our neighbour and the earth we share, being ever more attentive to the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.
The theme of Pope Leo XIV’s message for the World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation is ‘Seeds of Peace and Hope‘.
The Papal Message can be read at https://www.cbcew.org.uk/care-of-creation-2025-papal-message/
The Catholic Bishops' Conference for England and Wales and the Lead Bishop for the Environment, Bishop John Arnold, has called for Catholics to take action to address our environmental crises.

Archbishop Malcolm McMahon OP, has officially declared the case of John (Jack) Traynor as a miracle. Jack was a pilgrim on the archdiocese's first official pilgrimage to Lourdes in 1923 and was cured dramatically of epilepsy, paralysis of the right arm and paraplegia during the pilgrimage. Arc hbishop Malcolm said: “Given the weight of medical evidence, the testimony to the faith of John Traynor and his devotion to Our Blessed Lady, it is with great joy that I declare that the cure of John Traynor, from multiple serious medical conditions, is to be recognised as a miracle wrought by the power of God through the intercession of Our Lady of Lourdes.” (Dec 2024)
Fr Paul
For 9 years Fr Paul has been your parish priest in St Margaret Clitherow parish. In that time he has steered the parish through some challenging situations. He is without doubt one of our most gifted priests.
In the light of this I have asked him to go to Wigan to be the parish priest of the 3 church community of St William’s. This is made up of St Mary’s, St John’s and St Patrick’s churches. This community needs to be led very sensitively and I am sure that Fr Paul is the right man for this.
I know this will come as a shock to you.
I am delighted to be able to say that I am sending a priest to be your parish priest, Fr Francis Agada. He is a missionary of St Paul (MSP). He has been in Kirkby for the last two years. He is full of life and energy and so will be able to carry on where Fr Paul is leaving off.
These changes will take place in the early part of January 2025. Please keep me and all our priests in your prayers as we keep you in ours.
Archbishop Malcolm
'....as we approach the end of this Pope-given season ... we need to carry our pro-active concern beyond the 4th of October. Care of this gift should become part of our way of life, a constant and on-going part of our decision-making. I am not talking about ‘saving the planet’. The planet will look after itself one way or another. What I am talking about is valuing a gift from a loving and generous God.
We unite in celebrating creation in every Mass, knowing that Our Lord takes what we offer and transforms it into His New Creation, the Bread of Life.'
The Rt Rev Paul Swarbrick
Bishop of Lancaster

At the beginning of Advent 2021, in a reorganisation of the Archdiocese, Leigh Deanery was merged with churches in the Wigan area to form Wigan and Leigh Deanery. It covers not just Wigan and Leigh but also many of the smaller villages and towns surrounding the towns. Deanery priests meet no less than eight times a year and at least twice a year with the Deacons of the Deanery. Fr Gordon Abbs was appointed Dean in Advent 2021. His term of office runs until 29th Feb 2024.
